John Krasinski, known for his work on the American adaptation of ‘The Office’, has been labelled ‘People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive 2024’. This comes as a surprise to many, even the actor and filmmaker’s wife, actress Emily Blunt (who said she’d wallpaper the house with the cover if he got it!) and Krasinski himself – the 45-year-old unusually having “no thoughts” at the moment he was told.
So why was he chosen to replace 2023’s winner Patrick Dempsey, when he hasn’t starred in any new projects? Nor made or started the production of any new pieces? Is this title really deserved? Dempsey (2023) released 2 films in his year of reception of the award and one in the year prior; Chris Evans (2022) starred in the thriller ‘Gray Man’ alongside Ryan Gosling the year of his nomination (and from the advertising posters was a much deserved winner). Even Emily Blunt has put out more films than her husband, especially with her recent appearance in David Leitch’s ‘The Fall Guy’, and at least she doesn’t look like the elf from Disney's ‘Onward’ -
So, in order to soothe our disappointment, let’s look at some of the more relevant and - let's face it - more attractive male celebrities that could’ve taken the title without inciting such debate:
NOMINATION NO 1: Ryan Gosling
Emily Blunt’s co-star and good friend, who acted as Aaron Taylor Johnson's stunt double in the aforementioned ‘The Fall Guy’ just before he gave a dazzlingly pink performance at the 96th Academy Awards with his song “I'm just Ken”. Surely an actor who can give an amazing performance in an even better feminist film, accept the mockery his character got as a result, and still look fine enough to have 256 million views of related posts on TikTok is a deserving winner for this year’s magazine cover.
NOMINATION NO 2: Glen Powell
After his Dec 2023 Rom-Com ‘Anyone but You’ received mixed reviews from critics (ranging from “Best rom-com in years. So, refreshing” to “I have never written a movie review, but if it keeps even one person from seeing this piece of trash, it’ll be worth it.”), Powell quickly bounced back with ‘Twisters’ which received a delighted up-roar from the social media platforms, naturally followed by an all-consuming number of ‘fan-cams’ and edits of his character. A very popular candidate for this year.
NOMINATION NO 3: Aaron-Taylor Johnson
His personal relationships are often a hot topic for speculation and gossip, but if he’s good enough to be the next James Bond, surely he is a notable possibility for Sexiest Man of 2024? His upcoming part in the film ‘Kraven the Hunter’ (which is presumably just him walking around shirtless for two hours) and role in ‘The Fall Guy’ are a lot more than the current winner has done this year. He’s been an established heartthrob since his debut in the teenage comedy ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’, for which he’s been given the title of ‘childhood crush core’. A much better suited option to the title.
NOMINATION 4: Hugh Grant
It was very hard not to watch him in the final scenes of his latest release “Deadpool and Wolverine”, which even Deadpool evidently swooned over. The actor captured a lot of attention this year and is definitely worthy of the title.
Overall, the cynic could argue that this annual contest is just a big joke to make those who have been forgotten for a while feel better about themselves and their slowly fading careers. RIP John Krasinksi’s self respect.
