After an unprecedented number of resignations from the cabinet and the Conservative Party, prime minister Boris Johnson announced to the BBC this morning that he would resign today.
This promise was fulfilled when, after hours of suspenseful waiting, Boris Johnson faced the cameras and the awaiting nation from outside Number 10 Downing Street.
After recognising his government’s achievements, Boris Johnson acknowledged that it was clear that he had to resign. He did confirm, however, that he would continue as Prime Minister until a new conservative leader had been elected, which is expected to occur within a week.
Addressing his final thanks to his family, the national services and the British public, the former Mayor of London disappeared behind the black door of Number 10 for the last time, setting the sun on a turbulent term in office.
