Every year movie production companies tease their viewers with what blockbusters are soon to grace the big screen using exciting, captivating trailers – trailers that have many of us adding the films to their “films to see” note on their phone, only to be crushed with the closing text “In cinemas....next year!” Really?! These companies just love making us wait for their new releases with heavy anticipation, even though the film itself has been finished for months. However, 2025 is finally upon us, so it’s time to see what we’ve got to look forward to this coming year. Will it be one of the best lists of films yet? Or will it be a complete disappointment? Gets your notes app ready...
January:
Starting off strong for the hopeless romantics
among us, we have ‘We Live in Time’ starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh - a heartfelt Rom-Com with a sprinkling of drama on top. Rated 15, it’s looking to be a brilliant feature to kickstart the new year, telling the story of a talented chef and a recently divorced IT Consultant meeting and soon falling in love. They embark on building the home and family they've always dreamed of, until a painful truth puts their love story to the test. PLEASE BRING TISSUES.
Next up is an exciting biopic of Bob Dylan starring Timothée Chalamet, who was nominated for a Golden Globe for this role. The musical-drama portrays the legendary musician in his early career as he arrives in 1960s New York City, also starring Elle Fanning and Edward Norton. The film has received very positive reviews amongst critics in the US. Catch this latest biographical feature on the 17th of January in cinemas.
These are just a couple of the films being released this month, but there is much more in store this January...
February:
Despite the latest scandal concerning his relationship with Sabrina Carpenter, Barry Keoghan’s Irish thriller has a confirmed UK release date- 7th Feb - and many critics are excited to see what it has in store. Bring Them Down - set in Ireland - depicts the isolated son of a farming family whose conflict with a rival family stirs violent tensions. The film contains violent imagery and animal cruelty, as seen in the trailer when Keoghan’s character Jack is encouraged to kill the rival family's livestock. An exciting feature to start, but I think for a lot of people it’s the next film that could truly be the highlight of the year- it certainly is for me.
Cancel your Valentine’s Day plans - the final chapter of Bridget Jones’ Diary is being unveiled on the 14th of February! The much-loved spinster, after the death of her beloved Mark Darcy, is going "Mad about the Boy” played by ‘One Day’ star Leo Woodall. The trailers make the movie seem just as promising as the previous films. The film has almost all of the original cast, including Love Actually stars Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson. This is shaping up to be a brilliant final chapter to the beloved series originally written by Helen Fielding.
Marvel fans have much to look forward to this year, with a new Captain America gracing the big screen this February. Starring the character ‘Falcon’ as the eponymous hero, MCU fans are excited to see whether Anthony Mackie is able to uphold the previous star’s (Chris Evans) legacy - as well as his fan base. Lifelong fans will be visiting the cinema on its release (Also February 14th), hoping and praying it doesn’t disappoint.
March:
This March, Disney is bringing us (yet again) another live action remake of one of their much adored classics. This year’s first victim is Snow White; although we have already seen numerous adaptations of this fairy tale, Disney has chosen to update their original 1937 feature. Starring Rachel Zegler (The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, West Side Story), the film premieres on the 21st. Will it be a total let down? It is just Disney procrastinating coming up with any new ideas? Avid fans will soon find out.
April:
I personally don’t know how I feel about this next film, but it’s been produced as a result of high demand on social media, and on the 4th of April we will finally know whether or not it was all worth it. The cast includes some heavy-hitting names like Jack Black (who also played a role in the mario movie) and Jason Mamoa, (aquaman himself), alongside Emma Myers and Danielle Brooks , who act as their actual human selves in this dimension amongst the classic Mojang characters. However, fans and critics were surprised - in the worst way - with what the film has to offer; one critic even said, “While I wasn’t expecting amazing things from this […] I was expecting MUCH better than what is embarrassingly shown here. My goodness.” It looks as if it’s not going to be receiving any awards soon - or many positive reviews for that matter.
May:
Another one for the Marvel fans: Thunderbolts was first announced back in late 2022 and fans have been patiently waiting for its May 5th release ever since. The film brings together a crew of anti-heroes we’ve met throughout the previous MCU eras: the Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova, her father Red Guardian, and many more. Critics are certainly excited to see these characters develop over the film, but I bet psychology student are too – we’ll have to wait a little longer to see if this new Motley Crew have the potential to form the new Avengers.
May is seeming to be the month of movie action, also releasing the sequel to Tom Cruises final Mission Impossible! Lots of us will need to rewatch Dead Reckoning to prepare for the Final Reckoning, which hopefully will solve the case and push viewers back away from the edge of their seats. This is said to be Cruise’s last Mission, hence the title, and so he is reportedly beginning his search for an Ethan Hunt Jr! What a tough act to follow!
June:
For the final film in part one of this run-down, the live action How to Train Your Dragon is a must-mention. The story, which started out as a series of ten minute episodes that then progressed to three spectacular features, is a firm childhood classic for many students today. It’s return in live-action form is sure to ruin many childhoods if this film isn’t a success (no pressure to the director, Dean Deblois!) The trailer only shows small snippets of the film but it’s clear that CGI Toothless is still so cute!!!!!
